A defibrillator is a medical device that applies an electric current to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat during sudden cardiac arrest. When used alongside effective CPR within the first 3 to 5 minutes of collapse, a defibrillator can increase survival rates up to 70%. Public devices, known as Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), are designed for untrained bystanders. They use internal safety systems to analyse the patient's heart rate and will never deliver a shock unless it is medically required.
